Heh, I can see it now, engy's using multiple shelves to get on top of point B on Gravel Pit, and I'm sure numerous other places. It could really change sentry placement in drastic ways, but a few guys working together can just get their teleporters up in odd places and not have need of shelves anymore.
This isn't a signature....It's a tarp.

I like this idea a lot.

When a team has 2 engys on a map where everyone is giong to the same place (ie: Gravel pit after BLU already capped A and everyone is going to B) there is no need for 2 level 3 teles going to B. Having an engy with a shelf would be a great idea, better if he had 2.

Great job Luke, you get my approval.

The Diamondback
Engineer needs a whip/lasso. swap it out for the shotgun, has a 20ft range, no reloading or crits, maybe 30 damage a hit and a slower firing rate than shotgun? and can grab metal/healthpacks for the engi? I really just want to whip people, I'd use it if it did 2 damage a hit just to mock people.

The Big Impact
Power tool instead of the wrench. greater increase of build speed when hitting structures that are going up.. This weapon works like a melee flame thrower, you have to hold it on them to hurt them. No crits?

Mech-Suit
Replaces all buildable items for 4 parts that can be combined to form a temporary mech-suit the engineer can pilot. sentry gun is replaced with a turret gun, works as well as a lvl2 sentry but must be used like a turret, no auto-shooting. Dispenser is replaced by a steam engine to power the suit, works as well as a lvl1 dispenser. Teleporters will be replaced with arms and legs, which are useless unless used in combination with the others. Im not sure how much metal each should take to build, maybe 200 each, because they would all be level1s, except the turret, which would go to level2 for another 200 metal. Once everything is made, the engineer combines (couple seconds to combine?)it and can operate it until its out of ammo (200, can not grab ammo?) or just a 20-30 second timer? then all the stuff blows up and becomes scrap metal, ejecting the engineer. Moves as fast as an unspun heavy, has 200 hp, can not be crit/headshot/backstabbed, but can be sapped(engi must bail and remove sapper?) can be fixed by another engineer or yourself if you are outside if it(this makes it seem OP to me) but can not add ammo if that is its limiting factor.Dispenser/steam engine goes with you so people running around with you get health/ammo. I was thinking the pieces wouldnt construct themselves, you would be required to hit them with your wrench. An after thought is that the turret would suck because you cant fix it while shooting, unless there was another engi on it, maybe the steam engine has a slow fix aura? this is the most complex hypothetical addition ever.

What do you guys think? (besides the names are weak...)

I had a few ideas a while back for engi items. I haven't really given them much thought, though, so don't chew me out for their obvious flaws. The Steam forum link is: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13962375#post13962375
Launch Pad
Swapped out for the Teleporter, the Launch Pad works like a gravity lift. You can place two, and it launches players or items (weapons from dead players, demo pills/stickies) forward (horizontally), at a 45-degree angle, or straight up. When horizontal, it gives players a Targe-like charge, which could be hilarious, but obviously imbalanced. When angled, it gives classes like Pyro and Heavy an offensive jump forward and up, or it could serve as a defensive/fleeing mechanism to reach platforms/health/metal. When vertical, it lets players reach high platforms, which could be good for Engineers and snipers. The Launch Pad has diminishing returns on "heavier" classes, reducing the distance a Heavy can travel, and discouraging Soldiers and Demomen from taking it because their jumps are more effective.
Railgun Sentry
A sniper rifle-equipped sentry with a low rate of fire, but high damage output. Its range is 1.5x that of a regular sentry, and has a damage scale related to distance to the sentry; the farther away you are, the greater the chance of a headshot (and accuracy), but lower damage, while if you get close, it has a higher chance of missing due to its slow turn (making Scouts, Pyros, and speedy Soldiers/Demos effective counters), but also higher damage. Really annoying, but not overpowered due to its weakness to close range.
Landmines
Replacing the pistol, the landmines are like sticky bombs in that you can only have a certain amount (3-5?) on the ground at any time. They explode and deal 75-100 damage in a small area when stepped on. However, a pyro can disable them by flaming ahead of themselves (effectively making them immune to landmines). The Engineer must "build" each one, which takes one or two full seconds. Soldiers and Demomen can detonate them with their respective explosives as well. Engineer "Landmine-jumping" should not be allowed for balance, but may be possible only when the Engi is ubercharged.
Backpack Dispenser
Replacing the sedentary dispenser, the engineer can opt to build a backpack dispenser, which has an overall lower rate of replenishment (both health and metal), but can be upgraded once (spend 200 metal all at once, and the backpack upgrades over 10 seconds). Obvious advantages for roaming engineers, but limits the effectiveness of sentries built by this engie due to his roaming tendencies.

Railgun is cool, but might be over powered with launch pad getting engineer to crazy far away places.. but launch pad is hilarious and awesome.
Does the backpack blow up when the engi dies? or is it dropped and others can grab/use it?

I lol when I think of a heavy launching over the walls on goldrush or whatever.

I can't decide if the backpack would explode like a normal dispenser or drop like a toolbox (200 metal). Maybe the latter to balance it more.

Could be useful, but I wouldn't swap it out for a shotgun because of the existing availability of metal to most Engineers.

I like this idea a lot. Increasing the Engie's close-range damage and improving build rate are two important aspects of the update I think they need to address. No crits would be an appropriate balance, but won't have an effect on no-crit servers, so another balance would have to be you must have metal to operate it.

No. This idea is fun, in theory, but is just too grand of scale to work in TF2. Might be a fun idea for Garry's Mod, though...
